What’s Happening On Site

As at November 2018, development of Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak from Telok Melano to Miri is about mid-way into its construction period. With site clearance completed, the main activities at the various works packages include:

  • Earthworks – comprising excavation and disposal of unsuitable or excess material, and fill of suitable material, ie. earth and rock. Where necessary, the import of suitable material has been made to the site of the future Highway.
  • Drainage Works – construction of berm, median, toe and roadside drains. Work on 1,662 units of pipe culverts and 418 units box culverts has also begun.
  • Geotechnical Works – soft ground treatment which includes surcharge, perforated vertical drains, piled embankments and/or sand replacement, as well as slope stabilization which entails retaining walls, soil nailing, rock-bolting.
  • Bridge works – includes the construction of new as well as demolition of existing bridges that need to meet the R5 standard of the future Pan Borneo Highway. Phase 1 involves construction of bridges at no less than 115 locations across Sarawak! These range from short single-span bridges to the longest one at 1.708km in length across Batang Rajang at Durin, Sibu.
  • Pavement works – at some stretches, new 2-lanes are already taking shape alongside the existing 2-lane single carriageway. Here pavement works have progressed to base and sub-base level.
