Task force to look into ways to ease traffic woes at Mile 6

Wednesday, 27 November 2019, Kuching: A meeting was called by Sarawak Minister of Transport (MOT) Datuk Lee Kim Shin yesterday at his ministry to find ways to ease the traffic congestion at Mile 6 and Mile 4 ½.

LBU Project Manager for Sematan-Sungai Moyan (Works Package 02) Dahlim Mungkil who was present at the meeting briefed the minister on measures which had already been taken since the construction of the interchanges at the two locations started two years ago.

These measures, among others include road widening, adjustment to traffic light’s timing and engagement with public.

“These are some of the measures that we have taken so far on top of the road safety campaign and installing traffic signages at these locations which are known to be heavy with traffic, especially during peak hours.

“When it comes to heavy construction activities, for example the beam launch, the presence of the traffic police personnel also helps to ease the congestion,” said Dahlim in the meeting.

Also present in the meeting were representatives from State Public Works Department (JKRS), Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), Kuching City South Council (MBKS) and traffic police.

Meanwhile, Lee has proposed the setting up of a task force to look into ways to further improve the traffic flow in these areas.

The task force will involve his ministry, LBU, State Public Works Department (JKRS), local councils, traffic police and other relevant government agencies.

“We will try to convene a meeting for this task force soon, to be chaired by the ministry’s permanent secretary to address the traffic woes during this construction stage.

“This traffic woes are only temporary due to the construction works now.

“However, once the construction is completed in 2021, the flyovers will definitely provide a smooth drive for motorists,” said Lee.

Both Mile 6 and Mile 4 ½ Interchanges are located within the Kuching Serian Road (KSR) where there are two other interchanges i.e. Mile 7 and Mile 10 which are also currently being constructed.

Once completed, these four interchanges will help ease the traffic movement from Kuching to Serian and vice versa.
