Mile 6 flyover to start beam launch

Wednesday, 13 November 2019, Kuching: The Mile 6 flyover along Kuching Serian Road (KSR) will see the beam launching activity starting from November 26 until 28.

LBU project manager for Sematan-Sungai Moyan (Work Package 02) Ir. Dahlim Mungkil said to facilitate this construction activity, the road leading to Mile 4 ½ from Serian would be partially closed for the safety of road users.

“We are going to launch a total of 18 girders for that two days during off peak hours from 10pm to 5am so as not to inconvenience the road users.

“We urge those who travel along that particular stretch to observe traffic signages and drive safe,” said Dahlim.

Construction of this flyover which is about 30% completed, situated right in front of Kuching Sentral Mall, started to pick up after the project team resolved the issue of underground cavities at the site during the initial stage.

With only few cavities presence to be tackled now, work at site has now moved on to bored piling work while one could also see that four out of the 11 crossheads have already taken shape.

To recap, the project team encountered the cavities in the limestone strata in the ground and this affected six out of the 11 piers. The remaining piers are not affected based on the initial soil studies.

Cavities are expected in limestone formation and hence, appropriate design and bore piling construction methods have to be executed to ensure the maximum performance of the bore piles.

Before the pier work proceeds, pre-boring has to be done to find out whether there is any cavity in each of the 11 piers. Cavities have to be treated by filling them with concrete before the 1000mm diameter bore piling works can be carried out.

The project team would move on to do other works like pile caps and columns as well as the cross-head beams after the bored piling work.

A dedicated traffic management team is put in place to manage and monitor traffic furniture while temporary street lightings are put up to ensure good visibility at the work site for public and road users

This 430m long flyover is expected to be completed by end of next year.

Under Works Package 02, there are five more interchanges to be built other than Mile 6. They are Mile 4 ½, Mile 7, Mile 10, Bau and Lundu Interchanges which are in various stages of works.
