Thursday, 24 October 2019, Kuching: Construction of Mile 6 flyover has started to see some activities now after the issue on the presence of underground cavities has eventually been resolved, with only few to be tackled now.
LBU project manager for Sematan-Sungai Moyan (Works Package 02) Dahlim Mungkil said with the issue resolved, work at site is very much focused on bored piling now.
“At the same time while we do the piling work, you could see that four out of the 11 crossheads have already taken shape.
“We expect to do the beam launch for this 12 spans flyover hopefully by January next year,” he said.
To recap, the project team encountered the cavities in the limestone strata in the ground and this affected six out of the 11 piers. The remaining piers are not affected based on the soil studies.
Cavities are expected in limestone formation and hence, appropriate design and bore piling construction methods have to be executed to ensure the performance of the bore piles.
Before the pier work proceeds, pre-boring has to be done to find out whether there is any cavity in each of the 11 piers. Cavities have to be treated by filling them with concrete before the 1000mm diameter bore piling works can be carried out.
After the bored piling, Dahlim added that the project team would move on to do other works like pile caps and columns as well as the cross-head beams.
“We hope to complete this 430m’s long flyover by end of next year,” he said
Due to the busy traffic along the Kuching Serian Road (KSR) where the flyover is, a dedicated traffic management team is put in place to manage and monitor traffic furniture while temporary street lightings are put up to ensure good visibility at the work site for public and road users.
Two out of the four lanes in the vicinity are closed to enable the construction works to be carried out.
In place for this is the widened road on both the Kuching and Serian bound routes to divert the traffic.
Under Works Package 02, there are five more interchanges to be built other than Mile 6. They are Mile 4 ½, Mile 7, Mile 10, Bau and Lundu Interchanges which are in various stages of works.
Samling Resources Sdn Bhd is the main contractor for this works package.
