LBU not messing with work quality

Tuesday, 8 October 2019, Kuching: Being the Project Delivery Partner for Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak, Lebuhraya Borneo Utara (LBU) together with the main contractors have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the Highway, once completed, will be of highest standard.

To do this, LBU has embarked on stringent quality assurance on all construction activities since the project started in 2016.

In giving an example of this quality assurance, LBU Head of Support Services Azman Hashim said his department, which is in charge of quality assurance and control, has consistently engaged with the main contractors when it comes to the quality of asphalt used in pavement works.

“As you can see now, the first carriageway has started to take shape across all the works packages. Since beginning of this year, we have been carrying out regular inspections on the asphalt batching plants at the works packages to ensure they comply with the standards and quality set as per project requirements,” said Azman.

As they say, quality input leads to quality output. Hence, during plant inspections, the QAQC team verify quality control plans and check points starting from the raw materials, to production and laying. Among the control parameters checked are sieve gradation, bitumen content, bulk specific gravity, compaction tests for the binder course.

“For instance, for every 200 tonnes of binder course laid, there must be a minimum of one test for bitumen content carried out to ensure consistency. This test will be done by the contractor in the presence of the resident engineer team (RET).

“All findings from these plant inspections are shared with the contractors and RET for their follow up. If we find something that needs to be improved, we will bring it to the contractors’ immediate attention for them to rectify”, said Azman.

“Overall, we are happy to see that all contractors are striving to build a good highway” he added.

Recently, the Special Officer to the Works Minister Malaysia, See Chee How, praised the good work of all works packages contractors in ensuring the high quality of Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak.

“I can very proudly say that all works contractors are actually putting in a lot of effort to ensure the high quality of the roads of the Pan Borneo Highway that we are upgrading and constructing now.

“The quality of works on the roads of Pan Borneo Highway is of high standard; and here I would say that for quite a period of time after the completion, there will be very little maintenance done on the present works that the contractors are working on,” said See, who is State Assemblyman for Batu Lintang, at the recent 2019 Sarawak Investment and Business Summit held here.
