Wednesday, 11 September 2019, Betong: Forty kilometres of new carriageway at Batang Skrang to Sungai Awik stretch (Works Package 05) of the Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak, paved up the binder course level is expected to be ready by end of this year.
LBU Project Manager for Works Package 05 Chan Ching Soon said road works are now progressing actively to open this first carriageway to the traffic by then.
“So far, we have opened about 3km of first carriageway to the traffic and we are optimistic by end of the year we are able to ready first carriageway before we move on to work on the second carriageway,” said Chan.
Works Package 05 is located relatively 240km from Kuching and 200km from Sibu and its alignment is between Batang Skrang and Sungai Awik. This works package is sub divided to two sections i.e. Betong section (33.70km) and Spaoh section (34.24km).
The main components of this works package are the main carriageway, nine bridges with three in Betong section and the remaining six in Spaoh section and the iconic Betong Interchange which is located at the entry junction to Betong town as well as one pedestrian overhead bridge.
As for the construction of the three spans Betong Interchange, Chan revealed that one span had been launched while the project team is targeting to launch another two spans by November this year.
“This interchange will provide a highly smooth connectivity for the road users and easy access to Betong town once it is completed by middle of next year,” Chan added.
He further said five bridges are expected to be opened by end of this year i.e. Babu Bridge, Burui Bridge, Padeh Bridge, Paku Bridge and Layar Bridge.
