Beams launched for Sarikei Interchange

Monday, 19 August 2019, Sarikei: Beams for the three spans of 85m long bridge at Sarikei Interchange have started to be launched since last Friday.

LBU Project Manager for Sungai Awik Bridge-Bintangor Junction (Works Package 06) Suhaili Md Salleh said the whole process of this beam launch was targeted to be completed by this month.

“There are a total of 42 beams. We started with the span from Abutment B to Pier 2 last Friday before moving on to Abutment A and Pier 1.

“The middle span is on the existing road where a temporary road diversion will be constructed between Pier 2 and Abutment B to divert the traffic prior to the launching so that existing traffic flow will not be affected during the launching process.,” Suhaili explained.

Abutment refers to the substructure or superstructure at the ends of a bridge span where the beam rests or contacts. Pier meanwhile is a column or crosshead in between abutments.

The overall length of this 675m interchange will include some 590m Retaining Earth (RE) wall structure to be constructed on both bridge approaches.

Once the beam launch is completed, the construction will move on to the deck slab, parapet and other associated works.

Once completed by next year, this interchange will ease the traffic plying between Saratok and Sibu.

Works Package 06 which is divided into Bukit Sebangkoi section and Sarikei section over a total length of 64.486km. The package includes six bridges, 59 bus shelters, five pedestrian bridges and one layby planned at Roban.

PPESW BPSB JV Sdn Bhd is the main contractor for this works package.
