Thursday, 16 May 2019, Sibu: The girder launch for Sibu Airport Interchange which started on April 22 has now been completed. With all 84 girders or commonly known as beams fully launched, the project team can now focus on doing the deck slab for this seven-span flyover before they could move on to the road furniture.
Once completed in a year’s time, the interchange will make travelling to and from Bintulu direction to Sibu Airport and Sibu Jaya a breeze.
Simultaneously, the project team will start work on the roundabout and once completed next year, motorists travelling from Sibu town to Sibu Airport direction no longer have to take the temporary U-turn created a few days ago at the crossroad junctions to Bintulu to go to the airport.
Prior to this U-turn, motorists had to go through quite a distance using the Old Oya Road to go to the airport direction.
Works on the Sibu Airport Interchange which started in the middle of 2017 was affected initially due to soft ground conditions found in the area. The contractor had to treat a large area near the roundabout leading to an extra quantum of works.
Instead of proceeding with construction works based on the original drawings, the contractor had to spend time and resources to treat the ground first by doing piled embankment. This is an important measure to stabilise the road foundation.
Sibu Airport Interchange is expected to be fully completed by May next year. The main contractor for Works Package 07 is HSL DMIA JV Sdn Bhd.
