Tuesday, 14 May 2019, Sibu: Good news for road users who are travelling from Sibu town towards the Sibu Airport direction! Motorists from Sibu can now make a U-turn at the crossroad junction to go back to Sibu Airport Roundabout before proceeding to Sibu Airport direction.
With this temporary U-turn now in place, motorists no longer have to drive a longer distance and through the more rugged Old Oya Road to go to the Sibu Airport direction. To recap, motorists travelling from Sibu towards Sibu Airport direction were diverted at the roundabout to use the Old Oya Road to allow for construction of the Sibu Airport Interchange since middle of last year.
Sibu Airport Interchange is one of the largest interchanges along the new Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak. The future 7-span flyover will rise above a new 3-lane carriageway modified roundabout.
Work on this Sibu Interchange picked up recently with the launch of its 84 beams taking place at the end of last month. The launching of the beams is expected to be completed soon.
Once done, the project team will move on to do the deck slab before they work on the road furniture for the Interchange. Simultaneously once the beam launch is completed, the project team will work on the roundabout which is expected to take one year to complete.
When the roundabout is ready eventually, motorists travelling from Sibu town to Sibu Airport direction will no longer be required to make a U-turn at the crossroad junction. Instead, they can drive straight to the airport using the roundabout.
Sibu Airport Interchange is expected to be fully completed by May next year. The main contractor for Works Package 07 is HSL DMIA JV Sdn Bhd.
