Pan Borneo highway construction in S’wak to continue, assures state PH chairman

KUCHING: The construction of the Pan Borneo Highway in Sarawak will not be delayed, assured Pakatan Harapan (PH) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen.

He further clarified that only the Pan Borneo Highway project in Sabah will be delayed as said by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to a press conference during his official visit to Brunei Darussalam on Sept 3.

“As far as Sarawak is concerned, the Pan Borneo project will continue,” he told a press conference held at the Kuching International Airport VVIP terminal today.

Chong, who is also Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) deputy minister, said checks with the Prime Minister’s Office and the contractors involved in the project he said have confirmed that works are still ongoing in Sarawak as usual.

“In fact, a few contractors that I have called up are at the moment on site doing the construction,” he said.

He further revealed that for the Pan Borneo Highway in Sarawak, there will be some reviews to be taken to eliminate any substantial unnecessary costs and the leakages of funds.

The extra funds from the project, he said, will then be diverted to other development projects in Sarawak for the people’s benefit.

On another note, he also said any individuals who have openly criticised the PH government after reading a misleading news headline on Sept 4 that reported the project will be shelved should check their facts before making any allegations.

Also present at the press conference were Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii and PH Sarawak secretary Alan Ling Sie Kiong.
