Friday, 17 August 2018, Kuching: In a few months’ time, residents from Kuching will have another place to go to on the weekend – to the beautiful beaches of Sematan and for the first time, Telok Melano near to the tip of Borneo island.
This will be made possible with completion of Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak’s WPC01 Telok Melano – Sematan. The contractual completion date for the 32.77km long works package is in January 2019. However, the teams on the ground are taking full advantage of the current good weather towards completing ahead of time.
Construction works is currently focused on asphalt laying, now that earthworks in the greenfield stretch is almost complete.
Approximately two-thirds of the package equivalent to some 23km of binder course has been laid. The project team is expected to embark on laying of the wearing course by early September.
As for bridgeworks on the 6 bridges in WPC01, deck slab works have been completed for Sungai Siru, Kerambai and Pueh Bridges.
Installation of parapet wall for Sungai Siru is also done; similar works are expected to be completed at the other two bridges in a month’s time.
At Sungai Belinsah, deck slab works are on the way for completion in a week’s time, while similar works for Sungai Beduan Bridge and Sungai Samunsam Bridge are expected to be completed by November this year.
For the symbolic 7-span Samunsam Bridge, the star attraction of the project, preparations for beams launching in the balance 4 spans are ongoing.
On road furniture works, installation of guardrails is progressing well along this construction stretch. Road signage installation expected to commence next month. Street lighting poles and cabling works have commenced from the Sematan-Lundu road heading towards the first roundabout in the direction to Telok Melano.
