Safety at Workplace: Enhancing Emergency Response Skills

Wednesday, June 27 2018, Kuching: Living up to the motto of safety comes first, LBU is joining 23 other organisations and government agencies to take part in an Emergency Response Team (ERT) Skills Enhancement Training organised by the Fire and Rescue Department here today.

Represented by a team of 10, LBU’s team comprises staff from each of the seven floors it occupies in the Gateway Kuching building to participate in the training which is aimed to create awareness and build skills on a swift and effective response to emergency cases.

Prior to the event today, the team had undergone a training session at Tabuan Jaya Fire and Rescue Department to familiarise themselves with the activities required of an ERT. More than just teamwork and knowing the emergency procedures, endurance and physical strength are important factors required of ERT members.

The ERT skills training today will see the team showcasing their skills in handling firefighting equipment and the firehose, doing firemen lifts and even the Iron Man ERT.

Firemen lift is a technique enabling one person to carry another person without assistance - by placing the carried person across the shoulder of another carrier.

It is commonly used by firefighters to carry injured or unconscious fire victims away from danger.

The Iron Man ERT training meanwhile requires participants to carry a 20kg firehose or 20kg of water bottles and run for safety during the fire drill.

LBU Health Safety and Environment Officer Abdul Rahman Kadir said the training would help expose the staff who are part of the LBU ERT Team on how to respond during fire emergency.

“This training comes timely as LBU is placing utmost importance on the HSE not only at construction sites but also in our office,” he said.
