Saturday, 9 June 2018, Miri – Fifty boys and girls, aged between 5 to 17 years, from Kompleks Kebajikan Hamidah Yakup, Miri, under Lembaga Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Sarawak (PERYATIM) were treated to a sumptuous feast of grilled lamb, satay, crab and more by Lebuhraya Borneo Utara (LBU) this evening as part of the Company’s annual Ramadhan 2018 programme.
Where previously LBU had hosted ‘Buka Puasa’ events for children from orphanages in Kuching and Sibu, this time the team decided to head to Miri. Accompanying the team from LBU Head Office were the local team from WPC11 Sg Tangap - Pujut Link Road (TPL) comprising the PDP Project team, RET and ICE.
It was a fun and carefree evening of good food, distribution of ‘Duit Raya’, and getting to know the children. Many are orphans; others come from very poor families.
While many are from Miri, the children from the Miri Home originate from as far as Mukah and Bintulu; some all the way from Limbang and Lawas.
Some have lived in the Home for as long as 5 years. Upon completing secondary school at 17 years, the kids will leave.
The children always look forward to the month of Ramadhan when many corporates and individuals invite them for Buka Puasa. The celebrations extend till the month of Syawal when they get invited to Hari Raya Aidil Fitri Open Houses.
Often the children are given ‘Duit Raya’. When asked what do the children do with their ‘Duit Raya’, a caretaker of the Home shared that the monies are kept in the children’s bank accounts, as savings for when they eventually leave the Home.
“It’s their savings for their future. Some may want to continue their education; others may want to start work. At least when they leave us, they have some of their own money to start their next phase of their life”, explained a supervisor of the Home.
