Traffic Management Unit to be set up soon

Thursday, 1 February 2018, Kuching: A dedicated Traffic Management Unit will be set up soon in another proactive move to further enhance traffic management along the construction stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway Sarawak.

In revealing this during the roundtable discussion chaired by Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof yesterday, Head of Support Services Azman Hashim said the new and dedicated unit would be tasked to carry out specific traffic management roles and functions and programmes.

These functions, he said among others include continuous monitoring and enforcement of traffic management plans by the all the works package contractors, provide traffic safety awareness and educate the public and relevant stakeholders on safe travelling along the highway and to provide continuous awareness through regular safety programmes to traffic management site personnel and workforce.

The unit will be led by a manager who will be stationed at the PDP headquarters to monitor implementation of traffic management plan by 10 works packages.

The manager will be assisted by an officer to be stationed at the respective 10 works packages. Telok Melano-Sematan (TMS) works package is excluded as the construction of this stretch is on a greenfield where it is not a “live” road as compared to the remaining works packages.

Among the other traffic management initiatives which have been carried out so far are the festive road safety radio message on popular radio channels like Hitz FM and road safety campaign which will be embarked this year covering all the three regions in the state.

All the works packages have also been given stern reminder by the Head of Construction Management Ir. Ng Chin Meng to ensure the road safety features are at its fullest round the clock 24/7 during the festive seasons to ensure smooth and safe driving for the road users.

Chief executive officer Ir. Safuani Abdul Hamid has on many occasions stressed on the importance of road safety and urged the project team to not rest on their laurels to ensure the traffic management as well as that of HSE to be of highest degree of standard.
